Shoulder dystocia is an obstetric emergency which has the potential to cause physical and psychological trauma for mother and baby. Fetal demise may also be the result if shoulder dystocia is not managed swiftly and competently.

All midwives are expected to maintain their knowledge in relation to shoulder dystocia and the required emergency response, postnatal care and emotional support.

At the end of this online education, you will be able to:

- Understand the statistics associated with shoulder dystocia
- Recognise the antenatal and birth risk factors related to shoulder dystocia
- Be cognisant of shoulder dystocia associated complications for mother and baby
- Understand that there is often no associated risk for shoulder dystocia
- Be prepared to recognise and manage the shoulder dystocia as an obstetric emergency
- Refresh your knowledge of internal and external manoeuvres to support the resolution of shoulder dystocia
- Know and deliver effective postnatal care for mother and baby after shoulder dystocia
