Shoulder dystocia is an obstetric emergency which has the potential to cause physical and psychological trauma for mother and baby. Fetal demise may also be the result if shoulder dystocia is not managed swiftly and competently.
All midwives are expected to maintain their knowledge in relation to shoulder dystocia and the required emergency response, postnatal care and emotional support.
