All midwives are expected to maintain their skills in the preparation, facilitation and follow-up care of a woman choosing Neuraxial Blockade for pain management.

1. Understand the differences between epidural; spinal; and combined epidural/spinal anesthesia. 2. Discover the history and current statistics. 3. Discuss the potential side-effects and complications. 4. Describe consent. 5. Understand the midwife role in preparation, administration and ongoing care. 6. Achieve appropriate management strategies when complications are identified. 7. Maintain contemporaneous documentation for neuraxial blockade. 8. Ensure applicable follow-up care is provided.
