Cord Prolapse is an obstetric emergency which has the potential to cause significant mortality for mother and baby, and risk of fetal demise. Birth trauma may also be a result of the emergency event and relates to both physical and psychological harm causing significant and ongoing sequalae. All midwives are expected to maintain their knowledge in relation to cord prolapse and the required emergency response, postnatal care and emotional support.
This online learning is for midwives providing maternity care, and recertification is recommended yearly.

At the end of this online education, you will be able to: - Understand with the definition and incidence of cord prolapse - Know the risks associated with cord presentation and cord prolapse - Recognize the possible signs and complications of cord presentation or prolapse - Be aware of the flow chart used to manage cord prolapse - Integrate the interventions commonly used to manage cord prolapse - Understand the role of the midwife in displacing the fetal head for management of cord prolapse - Integrate effective planning and communication skills when caring for a woman with cord prolapse - Provide care for the woman and her baby after a cord presentation experience
