Basic life support provides healthcare workers with potentially lifesaving skills in response to a medical emergency while awaiting advanced interventions. Its main purpose is to preserve or restore life by the early recognition of an emergency, early call for help and management of airway, breathing and circulation with safe use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED) if required.

This is an annual requirement for healthcare workers in Australia.

Course Information

This course provides the learner an overview of the DRSABCD algorithm when responding to a medical emergency within a healthcare setting, as per the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation (ANZCOR) guidelines.

It includes recognising and responding to acute deterioration as per Standard 8 of the National Safety and Quality health service, with the goal to prevent cardiac arrest from occurring. When unable to prevent cardiac arrest, this course describes how to perform the steps of the DRSABCD algorithm with real life scenarios to put knowledge into practice.
