Aseptic technique is a term used to classify a set of principles which minimise contamination and prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in patients. This technique aims to protect healthcare workers from exposure to body fluids during invasive clinical procedures. It can be applied to several settings, procedures and environments. 

This course is considered mandatory training for many healthcare workers in all states and territories.

Course Information

This course provides healthcare workers with the knowledge and skills required to perform aseptic techniques safely and effectively in clinical environments. Learners will learn how to minimise the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), maintain sterile fields, and comply with infection prevention and control standards.

This online education is delivered in 2 parts:
Step 1: Online learning.
Step 2: Online knowledge quiz (100% pass required for certification).

Course Content

At completion of the learning material, you will be able to:
- Identify the definition and goals of aseptic technique
- Understand the type of healthcare associated infections (HAI) and their impact
- Be able to discuss how aseptic non-touch technique can reduce healthcare acquired infections (HAI)
- Understand the five principles of aseptic technique
- Follow the sequencing to perform an aseptic technique procedure
- Describe the key terminology and differentiate between different types of aseptic technique.
- Define the use of different aseptic fields
- Integrate post procedure care including waste disposal, hand hygiene, PPE and environmental cleaning, education
- Understand the common breaks in asepsis that can occur and implement corrective actions.
