Course Overview

This module will outline how AFE can occur during labour, birth or immediately following birth and is characterised by the sudden development of hypotension, respiratory distress, shock, cardiac arrest and uncontrolled bleeding.

1. Identify potential causes and risk factors for amniotic fluid embolism;
2. Discuss appropriate management for amniotic fluid embolism;
3. Describe the role in midwifery care during and following diagnosis and management of amniotic fluid embolism.
