Triage the ETEK Way' prepares clinicians to manage increasing demand in emergency departments by developing skills in comprehensive initial assessment, recognition of critical warning signs, patient prioritisation, and appropriate allocation of care.

While triage is primarily a nursing role, an understanding of triage processes, decision-making frameworks, and prioritisation principles is required by all emergency clinicians to support effective collaboration between nursing, allied health and medical staff. By gaining insight into the assessment and allocation processes that occur at triage, all staff can understand patient flow, early risk identification, and the clinical reasoning that underpins prioritisation decisions, contributing to more efficient and coordinated patient care.

This event has been accredited in the 2026 – 2028 ACRRM CPD Program for 6 Educational Activity Hours.

Course Information

This course provides the learner an overview of the Emergency Triage Education Kit (ETEK), an Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care publication, endorsed by the following colleges:

- College of Emergency Nursing Australasia
- Australian College of Emergency Nursing
- Australasian College for Emergency Medicine

The aim of ETEK is to promote consistency with the prioritisation and allocation of care using the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS). The course is comprised of five modules that detail how to perform a systematic triage assessment, communication strategies and documentation requirements at the triage window. It focuses on specific population groups that require adjustments in critical thinking and knowledge to assess. The course provides scenarios from the ETEK workbook to consolidate the information and knowledge check questions with each module to assess understanding.

It requires an 100% pass mark to receive a certificate of completion. You will receive 3 attempts for each module. This certificate does not replace supervised practice and assessment in the clinical environment. It is designed to build or refresh theoretical knowledge of the triage role.
